Bickleton's John Cardenas takes a jumper during the home opening game against Prescott on Dec. 1. Against Klickwood on Dec. 14, Cardenas scored eight points and recorded six steals for the Pirates.

After picking up their first win less than a week earlier against Cle Elum, the Bickleton Pirates made it two in a row after topping Klickwood 61-23 last Friday in Bickleton.

Now, aside from a couple games this weekend, the Pirates will have a long absence from the court and will pick things back up when they travel to Sunnyside Christian for their first Greater Columbia Gorge League game against the Knights.

Until then, Bickleton has a couple games at this weekend's Helix Tournament, starting with Ukiah-Long Creek on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Helix, which is about 30 miles southeast of Walla Walla.

Ukiah-Long Creek, which sits at 1-3 overall on the season, plays in the Oregon Class 1A High Desert League.

The Pirates though, got off to a quick start against Klickwood last Friday, and are off to a 1-0 start in GCGL play this season.

Klickwood and Bickleton's game was the first GCGL contest this season. The league also includes Sunnyside Christian, Trout Lake, and Yakama Tribal School. Last season, Sunnyside Christian captured the state title with a 69-61 win over Almira-Coulee-Hartline, while the Yakama Tribal Eagles finished fifth at state.

In last Friday's GCGL opener, Klickwood had a tough time slowing down Bickleton's offense, and also had a hard time getting its offense going.

Bickleton outscored the Vandals in each quarter and also limited them to fewer than 10 points in each quarter.

The Pirates, led by 23 points from senior Cesareo Arriaga, also received balanced scoring efforts from the rest of the team, with 10 total Pirates scoring at least one point. John Cardenas recorded his season high with eight points and also had six steals in the contest, while Michael Gannon chipped in seven points and four steals on the defensive end. Arriaga added 10 rebounds and five steals to go with his game-high 23 points, and Scott McBride finished with seven rebounds for Bickleton.

Hunter Dawson led Klickwood with eight points and Andrew McFall had seven, with both players hitting a 3-pointer.

Bickleton 14 18 20 9 - 61

Klickwood 7 2 7 7 - 23

Bickleton scoring: Cesareo Arriaga 23, John Cardenas 8, Michael Gannon 7, Hayden Andrews 5, Nathan Hanson 5, Christian Arriaga 4, Mandy Roberson 3, Dakota Riggs 3, Haylee Andrews 2, Scott McBride 1.
