Bickleton senior guard Michael Gannon takes the ball to the basket for two points during an early season game on Dec. 1 against Prescott. Gannon had six points and two assists in last Saturday's loss to the top ranked Knights.

The Pirates returned to the court after a lengthy absence, but ran into a buzz saw in the form of the Sunnyside Christian Knights.

The Knights, who've yet to lose a game this season, combined for 49 points over the second and third quarters after a closely contested first period en route to their 80-46 win that snapped Bickleton's four game win streak.

In a low scoring first quarter, the Pirates held the home team Knights to just four field goals over the first eight minutes of the game and trailed just 12-9 going into the second. Cesareo and Christian Arriaga and John Cardenas combined for Bickleton's points in the first, but after the slow start, the Knights started to roll.

They connected on 11 field goals in the second, including two 3-pointers and hit three more shots from beyond the arc in the third, finishing the middle two quarters on a 49-22 run to pull away from the Pirates after the close start.

Gannon and Cesareo Arriaga both hit triples for the Pirates and Arriaga scored 10 points just in the fourth for Bickleton but the Knights, with four players scoring in double figures, had too much firepower.

Arriaga had 19 for the Pirates and added 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals, Cardenas finished with eight points and three steals and Gannon had six points and two assists. Christian Arriaga added five points, five steals and three blocks.

The loss at Sunnyside was the first for the Pirates in just about a month, having won four of the six games they played in December. Their last loss came at Touchet on Dec. 4 and the team finished December with wins over Class 1A Cle Elum, league rival Klickwood and two wins at the Helix Tournament on Dec. 21 and 22.

Pirates 9 12 10 15 - 43

Knights 12 26 23 19 - 80

Pirates scoring: Cesareo Arriaga 19, John Cardenas 8, Michael Gannon 6, Christian Arriaga 5, Dakota Riggs 4, Scott McBride 2, Hayden Andrews 2.

Knights scoring: Brennen Rip 20, Kyler Marsh 17, Lucas Dykstra 16, Ross Faber 13, Bode Jackson 5, Tyler Groenzweg 3, Anthony Mendoza 3.

After just one game last weekend, the Pirates also have just one game this weekend, but again, they will have their hands full with another tough opponent.

They travel to Toppenish on Friday for the first of two matchups with the Yakama Tribal Indians, a team that has advanced to regionals in each of the last four seasons, including placing fifth at last year's state tournament.

The Eagles haven't played a Greater Columbia Gorge League game yet and Friday's matchup will be their first. They currently are 6-5 overall and ranked No. 7 by the WIAA RPI rankings.
