Junior Delaney Peters focuses at the free throw line against the Rangers last Friday. Peters led the Wolves with 12 points in the first game of the New Year.

Back from the Christmas break, the Goldendale girls couldn't catch a break in their first two games of the New Year, falling to Naches and La Salle as the Wolves are still searching for their first league win.

The Wolves, at home on Friday, fell to the Naches Rangers 66-32 before traveling to La Salle for an extremely tough road matchup, which the Lightning took 76-19.

The Lightning, the No. 2 team in the state among Class 1A teams according to the WIAA RPI Rankings, haven't lost this season and sit in firm control of the West with big wins already over Zillah, Granger and Cle Elum.

Both losses over the weekend dropped the Timberwolves to 0-5 in South Central Athletic Conference West play with seven league games remaining.

The Wolves had a tough time with a young and improved Naches team with a roster that featured four freshmen and five sophomores, including forward Allison Uecker.

Uecker was tough on the Timberwolves, scoring more than half of the Rangers' total points (34) while doing damage in the paint as well as at the free throw line. She was tough on the offensive boards, aggressive in the paint and made most of her free throws.

The win over Goldendale, along with a win on Saturday against Highland, brought the Rangers into a tie with Cle Elum for fourth place in the league.

Junior Delaney Peters scored 12 points to lead the Wolves and senior Kelli Bighorn added nine including one 3-pointer.

Wolves 8 7 10 7 - 32

Rangers 16 22 14 14 - 66

Goldendale scoring: Delaney Peters 12, Kelli Bighorn 9, Leslie Smith 4, Tiana Watson 4, Lene Riggers 1, Sara Hiebert 1, Abby Hedges 1.

Naches scoring: Allison Uecker 34, Faith Hahn-Landis 15, Taylor Dunbar 13, Maci Christopherson 4.

La Salle

The Timberwolves traveled to Union Gap Saturday to clash with the 11-0 and conference leading La Salle Lightning and a dominant first half was all the Lightning needed in the 76-19 contest.

Last season's SCAC champion and third place finishing team at state, the Lightning seem bound to meet and possibly exceed those results from last season and already have wins over three teams ranked in the top 11 of the WIAA RPI Rankings.

On Saturday, La Salle opened with 31 points in the first quarter and followed with 25 in the second and had a 56-12 lead built by halftime.

Three players scored in double digits for the Lightning's balanced offense while junior Ashley Bartkowski led the Wolves with six points.

Wolves 8 4 5 2 - 19

Lightning 31 25 14 6 - 76

Goldendale scoring: Ashley Bartkowski 6, Joellene Sargeant 5, Bighorn 3, Watson 2, Smith 2, Riggers 1.

La Salle scoring: Grace McGree 19, Trista Hull 16, Tatiana White 10, Gillian Martin 8, Kamryn Fiscus 7, Tahlia Klebaum 6, Natalie Newman 6, Lily Lancaster 2, Leah Ashby 2.

The Wolves will be out of town for both SCAC league games this weekend.

But things won't get any easier for them after recently playing conference leading and undefeated La Salle.

Goldendale will be at third place Zillah on Friday before traveling back to the Valley Saturday for the second of two matchups with second place Granger on Saturday. Both teams are currently ranked among the top 15 for Class 1A schools by the WIAA RPI.

Friday will be the first matchup this season with the Leopards, who are currently 9-3 overall as of Monday night. Zillah and Granger matched up on Tuesday but results weren't available at press time. Zillah is slated as the No. 11 1A team and Granger at No. 14.

The Spartans have lost just one league game and are 9-4 overall. The Spartans were in Goldendale on Dec. 14 when they topped the Timberwolves 62-23 in Granger head coach Andy Affholter's 400th career win.
