Total lunar eclipse coming

FULL GLORY: The total lunar eclipse of Jan. 31, 2018.

This region has been fortunate over the past few years in bearing witness to multiple beautiful lunar eclipses. However, the streak ends on Sunday, Jan. 20, with the final total lunar eclipse until May of 2021, which marks the final total lunar eclipse viewable from start to finish until March of 2025.

Because of Earth's rotation and time zones, the eclipse in question is being widely reported as occurring on Monday, Jan. 21; this is not true in the Pacific time zone. In our area, the entire eclipse occurs on the evening of Jan. 20 from 6:36 p.m. to 11:48 p.m., with maximum eclipse at 9:12 p.m.-quite convenient compared to last year's early-morning eclipse.
