Junior Cameron Mains shoots over Nico Chavez during the home game against Granger on Dec. 14. Mains scored a team-best 11 points on Friday against Zillah and added seven points and four assists against Granger on Saturday.

The Goldendale boys returned from a pair of out-of-town games last weekend to tipoff with the Highland Scotties at GHS on Tuesday, but results weren't available when the papers were sent.

But on Tuesday, the Wolves were looking to get back on track after a five game losing streak, which included losses at Zillah and Granger last Friday and Saturday respectively.

The Wolves first fell 91-34 to the No. 3 ranked (WIAA RPI Rankings) Leopards before a better performance on the road at Granger, but a strong first quarter for the Spartans propelled them to a 75-68 win to sweep the season series with Goldendale.

Goldendale's last win was just under a month ago against the Scotties on Dec. 18, winning 49-28 in Cowiche in what still remains the Wolves' lone South Central Athletic Conference win. The Scotties were coming off an 80-6 loss to Zillah on Jan. 12 when they traveled to Goldendale.

The Leopards, state contenders for the last handful of seasons, again look to be one of the favorites to take state at the SunDome in about a month and a half.

They took control early with a strong defensive effort which limited the Wolves to just six points in each the first two quarters, but also turned up the offense throughout the game with 11 different players scoring including four in double figures.

Wolves 6 6 14 10 - 36

Leopards 18 26 26 21 - 91

Goldendale scoring: Cameron Mains 11, Dylan Layfield 6, Hayden Lorton 4, Napoleon Owen 4, Skylar Lowe 3, Lane Siebert 2, Nick Lee 2, Curtis Kayser 2, Austin McKune 2.

Zillah scoring: Dakota Hibbs 18, Antonio Salinas 17, Sebastian Godina 16, Cesar Diaz 11, Weston Ide 7, Claysen Delp 6, Ben Kibbe 4, Parker Van De Graaf 4, Kaden Magana 3, Wesley Avila 3, Cody Vance 2.

At Granger Saturday for the second of two matchups with the Spartans, a 14 point deficit for the Wolves after one quarter proved too much to overcome.

The Spartans came out hot though, hitting three 3-pointers in the opening minutes and scoring 24 in the first. Granger hit just two threes for the rest of the game and held off Goldendale's second half rally.

Curtis Kayser, who scored 21 points in last season's 70-65 win at Granger, led the Wolves with 20 on Saturday including four 3-pointers. Nick Lee (13), Napoloen Owen (12), and Hayden Lorton (10) also chipped in with double digit points.

Wolves 10 19 17 22 - 68

Spartans 24 17 14 20 - 75

Goldendale scoring: Kayser 20, Lee 13, Owen 12, Lorton 10, Mains 7, Siebert 2, Ihrig 2, Layfield 2.

Granger scoring: Andre Castro 23, Trennen Slade 23, RJ Russell 15, Cass Herrera 12, Nico Chavez 2.

Up next

After matching up with the visiting Scotties on Tuesday, the Wolves will have just one game this weekend.

The Wolves will head to Cle Elum Saturday afternoon for a 7:30 p.m. contest with the 2-13 overall Warriors, the second of two matchups between the teams this season.

Cle Elum topped Goldendale at home 44-34 earlier this season on Dec. 15.

The postponed game against The Dalles RIverhawks that originally was set for Jan. 8 has been rescheduled for next Tuesday in Goldendale. The boys start around 7:30 p.m.
