So long, Archie, and thanks for everything

January 30, 2019

When I first moved to Goldendale, in 2006, my husband and I rented a small house on Allyn Street near Holcomb's Market. There was a small feral tuxedo kitten living near the market's dumpsters. He was skinny, sickly, and totally unapproachable. I began leaving food out for him, but despite the feedings, he remained wild.

Later that year, my husband, Tim, was laid off right before Christmas. Because we were living on unemployment and savings, we agreed to forgo Christmas gifts, just get a tree and cook a nice dinner. Dec. 22 was cold and wet; snow was forecast, and sleet was already falling. All day we heard a cat desperately crying. We searched for it everywhere but could not find it.
