'Age Wave' will affect everyone

Today, Japan has the oldest population, with over 30 percent of its citizens over 65. The U.S. is expected to reach the 30 percent level by 2050. Studies suggest that Klickitat County will reach that level much, much sooner.

Recent conferences in Vancouver and Tacoma have focused on the effect of the increasing age of our citizens. Studies show that the incomes of senior residents of Klickitat County decrease as they age. The 2020 census will likely provide additional evidence of this trend. Less income means less tax revenue for the county, at the same time as the demand for senior services increases. Already, probably 40 percent of emergency calls...
