Nursing bill passed with controversial measures eliminated

PERSUADED: Gov. Jay Inslee speaks to protesting nurses on Wednesday. Inslee spoke on how important these breaks are for both workers and patient care. Inslee indicated he would sign it into law.

The Legislature passed an amended version of a bill mandating meal and rest breaks for certain healthcare employees last Wednesday afternoon. The Senate passed the bill in a 63- 34 vote and the House passed it in 70-24.

Controversial amendments to the bill were removed in a confirmation committee Tuesday evening.

Sen. Maureen Walsh, R-College Place, proposed an amendment which passed that would limit shifts to 8 hours. In a floor speech last week, Walsh said, "Those nurses probably do get breaks, they probably play cards for a considerable amount of the day."
