WINDING UP: A GHS baseball hurler delivers a fast ball concentrating on footwork out of the stretch at practice last week.

On Saturday, April 27, Goldendale High School (GHS) baseball broke into the win column with an explosive offense, taking Highland down in a double header 24-14 in the 11 a.m. game and 18-8 in the 1 p.m. game. These results indicate a significant improvement in timely hitting and defense up the middle. Coach Ann Cochran is pleased with the progress the team has shown since training began in February.

"Games we were losing earlier the season by a wide margin have become much more competitive in the last several weeks," Cochran said. Fielding the youngest team in the league, she is confident that varsity will continue to improve and that in the seasons to come, she will be able to field a JV team, allowing the boys to get some training for their later years in varsity. "I'm very excited about this group," she added, "because everyone is returning next season, and the team chemistry will only improve, especially with the pitcher-catcher communication and up-the-middle defense."

Cochran emphasized that parent support is very strong, as they are committed to helping the team by getting the kids to the ballfield on time, supporting it with a strong turnout and doing their part to help the boys keep their grades up and remain eligible to play. "The parents don't always agree with my coaching regimen and communication with the boys," she said, "but they don't push back, as everyone agrees that it is a positive experience for the squad."

GHS travelled to Highland on April 30 and to Naches Valley on May 2 for games that were rescheduled earlier in the year due to the weather. Box scores from these tilts were not available at press time but will be published when received, along with the scores of the season's wrap-up game against Wapato on Tuesday.
