GHS softball team looking up and ahead after improving

 


Before Duane Witter interviewed for the Goldendale High School softball coach position, he reached out to Jaryd Cline, former sportswriter for the Sentinel, and asked, “What’s the problem; what do you see?”

Not a ball player but still a former high-school athlete, Cline offered the sage advice that from his point of view, the girls needed to be coached up. Their athletic ability was sharp, and defense up the middle was serviceable but could have been better. Timely hitting needed dramatic improvement. The girls went winless in 2018, capping a losing four-season run.

Witter and the girls broke through in 2019, finishing two games above .500, a remarkable turnaround from past years....
