Ah, summer! Fun in the sun—and in the water. If your dog(s) join you in outdoor activities please take a moment to read about two local, potentially deadly threats to your dog friends.

The first is called “blue green algae” but is in fact a species of bacteria called Cyanobacteria. In appearance it can vary from “green paint on the top of the water” to “several inches of green mat” on the edges of any lake, pond or puddle that doesn’t get good water exchange. It is more prevalent in hot weather but has been seen in Pierce county during freezing temperatures. Cyanobacteria doesn’t get much press considering the threat it poses to animals.
