Cougar said to attack dog in city

SEEN TOO OFTEN: Cougars are being spotted more around Klickitat County, including in Goldendale. This one was spotted in a back yard in Lyle in October. The WDFW has guidelines on what to do if you come across one.

A reader of The Sentinel, David Counts, called to express concern that the public in general and schools in particular are not being alerted about increasing cougar sightings and attacks in the state and specifically in Klickitat County. He said his son, Jay, who lives on Garrison Road in Goldendale, could give us a first-hand example.

"I let my dog out early one morning, when I heard a noise," the younger Counts recalls. "I ran outside in my PJs, and when I went around the corner, I almost stepped on the cougar's tail. It had grabbed my dog by the neck and had her upside down.
