GHS senior receives UW award

WELL DONE: UW representative Joseph Franco, right, awards GHS senior Sarah Gould the University of Washington Presidential Scholarship.

Goldendale High School senior Sarah Gould has been awarded the highly prestigious University of Washington Presidential Scholarship, consisting of $10,000 annually for four years. Gould is one of only 16 applicants from around Washington State to receive the award this year.

Recipients are considered outstanding in one or more of the following areas: Deep Engagement in Their Communities, showing commitment to the common good; Notable Innovation or Creativity which advances knowledge in a particular field; Emerging Leadership, visible via student-led change; Exceptional Talent, shown by artistic, scientific or academic achievement.

On March 1, Joseph Franco, an Admissions Counselor at the University of Washington, traveled to Goldendale to surprise Gould with her scholarship award and news that she'd been accepted to UW. "I was in complete and utter shock," Gould said. This was the first she'd heard from the university since she applied last fall.

Gould says she believes the advocacy she's shown for her community is the biggest factor in her receiving this scholarship award. While she hopes to get into the Competitive Creative Writing option at the UW, she knows she'll continue to support Native youth and Native women there, "No matter what!" She went on to say, "I want to impact the world, and the only way I see myself doing that is with a solid education. The smartest people on Earth are in my household, but they have not been afforded the same privileges and opportunities as I. They are my inspiration."
