Alice Lenoir

Alice passed away after a brief illness at her home in Goldendale, at the age of 91. She was born to the late James Paul Stackhouse and Nellie Blye (Robinson) Stackhouse in a house in Goldendale, with the assistance of a mid-wife. Alice and her older sister Erma were raised in Klickitat, where they enjoyed the close knit community and made many lifelong friends. Alice married her dashing and devoted husband Charles Jerome Lenoir in 1946, after his decorated service in World War II. They shared a life together in Goldendale for 66 years, until his passing in 2012.

In her earlier years, Alice worked in many of the local restaurants and cafes. Here she visited with and listened to many patrons, perhaps igniting her love for stories and personal histories. She was by no means an academic, but she had a vast knowledge of the peoples and places of Klickitat County. She enjoyed card playing, family get-togethers, and picking mushrooms or huckleberries on Mt. Adams. In her later years, she was a regular fixture at yard sales and often seen pushing a shopping cart through the local grocery stores. Most days she would look out her window at Mt. Adams and comment that she did not believe there was a better view in the world.
