The Goldendale Sentinel - Headlines & History since 1879

Sky Ablaze

Contributed: Troy Carpenter

Goldendale Observatory Administrator Troy Carpenter sent this picture with this information: "Some small thunderstorms moved through the area early this morning... We have

relatively little lightning here, so I always try to photograph any which occurs. This image is a 10-second exposure and captures rain illuminated by lightning somewhere between Goldendale and

Mount Adams. It was taken from Stringstreet Road at 4:32 a.m., July 23. The pinkish-purple tone is ionized nitrogen emission, the same source of those colors within the Aurora Borealis."
