County employment up

August 14, 2019

Klickitat County nonfarm employment rose by 130 jobs in June, slightly below the normal seasonal trend for the second month in a row. Government agencies added 50 jobs, while leisure and hospitality gained 40 jobs.

Manufacturing was unchanged over the month but will likely register declines in the near future due to announced cuts at Insitu.

Total employment rose to 6,890 jobs. The year-over-year increase was 180 jobs for a 2.7 percent growth rate—fourth best in the state. Half of the net new jobs came in manufacturing, while education & health services contributed 40 jobs and construction and mining another 30.

The county unemployment rate was estimated at 6.0 percent, more than a point above the 4.8 percent from June 2018. About 650 county residents were jobless and looking for work.
