The German shepherd is a most interesting breed of dog. They have known the very highest pinnacle of popularity as well as the unfair scorn of the public when careless breeding and nationalistic emotions have cast them to the depths of infamy. The same animal that were encouraged to attack prisoners in Nazi death camps were then entrusted to gently lead blind soldiers after the war. Their snarling face dons warning signs while the same face poked down into a snowy hole in an avalanche means life-saving help. Truly a servant of man, and able to meet many challenges.

The German shepherd is a relatively new "breed" cobbled together in the late 1890s from several European sheep tending breeds...
