DNR terminated lease and paid penalties

According to some around Goldendale, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is giving with one hand and taking away with the other. The DNR seems to be pitting indispensable entities—farmers, schools, and energy producers—against each other at the taxpayers’ expense. One local rancher was disposed of her lease with the DNR, and it cost the agency $100,000 when a new tenant didn’t come through.

When the DNR planned to develop a solar farm on the property leased to local rancher Ann Fernandez, the agency terminated her long-term lease abruptly—five years early. She had only six months’ notice and 60 days to move livestock and improvements. According to local rancher David Wes...
