'Creative' scammers now purporting to collect for state Revenue offices

PAY UP?: A Sentinel reader brought in this offi cial-looking letter he received purporting to be from a collection agency representing the Oregon Department of Revenue. It turned out the Oregon DOR owed him money.

With the holidays rapidly approaching, scammers are racing to relieve you of your hard-earned cash. The latest scam is the fake collection agency.

Goldendale resident Josh Rice has received more than a dozen aggressive calls demanding payment of a debt of $270 supposedly owed to the Oregon Department of Revenue. The collectors were unwilling to give information about the debt or about themselves, yet demanded personal information such as social security number, date of birth, and address from Rice.

Using the name, letterhead, and reputation of an actual agency, scammers attempt to intimidate consumers and business owners into giving out banking information. The caller is professional yet...
