Companion Animal: Do you love your pet--enough?

SAFE FROM HARM? Sometimes it's possible to "love" an animal for the wrong reasons, leading to a life of unnecessary suffering for the animal.

My friend had an unshakable conviction that, born with the genetic temperament of a world-class artist, she possessed a distinctive capacity for depth of emotion lacking in those of us factory-made from more common clay. Interestingly, this ability to love was never wasted on fellow humans but only on animals. Children she disliked, and adults were inconveniences in the way of her endless drawing, painting, and loving animals.

Her pets were way beyond obsessions, and they paid a heavy price. Loving her pets meant-above all else-keeping them from harm. Harm was the enemy, but maybe not for the reason you would think. Yes, "harm" could be a negative for the animal, but infinitively worse wo...
