Website launches with substance abuse resources

December 4, 2019

A new website has launched that supports families across Klickitat County with resources to help with substance use issues. is a major project that is supported by the Drug Free Communities grant received by Our Klickitat Prevention Coalition, which encourages community engagement as part of the comprehensive strategies to improve conditions for youth.

“We are excited to have the website available now to support our youth, their parents, schools and the community at large with information about substances and addiction in an effort to lower the rates of use throughout the county,” said Tammy Kaufman, Coordinator. She noted that it was an extensive effort of volunteers working with the website designer, MB Condon from Goldendale, that made it all come together.

The site contains information, lists resources, projects, events and a Youth Connector page. Parents will find tip sheets and videos that can assist them to start conversations with their kids of all ages and remind parents of the importance influence they have in their children’s lives. “It is great to have so many simple and easy to use Tip Sheets and brief videos all in one location and hopefully it will open some wonderful conversations between parents and their kids,” Kaufman said.

She shared an example with a link to the a program that focuses on how to prevent alcohol and marijuana use among young people. It reinforces simple positive steps parents can take engage their kids through bonding, setting boundaries and monitoring their actions by having conversations and knowing who they are with, what they are doing and when and where they are going. “Building relationships is a vital component to having healthy kids,” she said.

Get The Facts is another series offered on the website. It includes a whole list of fact sheets called Tips for Teens that cover a variety of topics from tobacco & e-cigarette (vaping) use, to alcohol and other types of potential drugs that students might be introduced to during their youth. The series is designed to educate teens on the risks of substance use in a factual presentation to demystify some commonly held misperceptions to encourage them to make the choice not to use.

“Community members are welcome to submit events around the county that provide youth healthy options for their free time to be placed on the calendar by emailing with details and fliers. We welcome and encourage community participation and invite the community to join us at the next quarterly coalition meeting being held Friday December 13 from 9-11AM in the lower level at the Goldendale Community Library,” she said. An electronic meeting option will also be made available.
