They're official: The mayor and four city councilors were sworn in at Monday's city council meeting.

Goldendale City Council met Monday night for the first time in the new year and took care of some needed formalities. Four council members and Mayor Mike Canon were sworn in. The mayor and councilors Andy Halm, Jane Roberts, and Filberto Ontiveros were elected or re-elected in November, and Loren Meagher was appointed last month to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of former councilor Guy Theriault. Councilors also elected Andy Halm, the senior member on the council, as mayor pro tem to fill in for the mayor as needed and sorted out committee assignments.

The city's volunteer fire department reported that in 2019 they were called out 189 times, including for 10 structure fires, 10 wildland fires, and 99 medical calls.

Police Chief Reggie Bartkowski reported 3,338 calls for service in 2019 as compared to 2,865 in 2018, an increase of 473 calls. "A lot of this goes to a lot more people calling in suspicious activities," he said, noting that many times the suspicious person or activity was benign, and just 325 calls resulted in a charge being filed. "We're pleased to have such cooperation," he added. "We want people to report everything that's happening to them."

Councilors set several committee meeting dates. The event committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, before the city council meeting, and nonprofit groups looking for tourism dollars are asked to bring a short executive summary of what they want the money for. The reason the council meeting is being held on a Tuesday night is because Monday is the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday holiday. The public works committee will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27.

The mood at the meeting was very positive. As City Administrator Larry Bellamy put it, "We are ready to rock and roll for the new year, and I think everybody is excited about getting started in 2020 and to make it another memorable year.
