Purebred dogs represent humankind’s long and very clever mission to take the grey wolf—a jack of all trades but master of none—and by selective breeding produce a variety of dog-breeds tailor made for specific useful purposes. Today 400 some dog breeds worldwide stand as a testament to human ingenuity and the genetic plasticity of the domestic dog.

The dog’s ancestor, the grey wolf, survives in the wild by being balanced in their drives. Their prey drive must be a continuum of locating prey by sight or scent, stalking, tracking, chasing, and killing prey.
