If newspapers computed their years as humans do and Washington was California, The Sentinel would take a hitch in its belt today, blow out the 61 candles on its birthday cake and sigh: "Just four more years and I'll be eligible for Ham and Eggs." For with this, the first edition of 1940, The Sentinel begins volume 61 in its ever-unfolding history of Klickitat county. Established in 1879, The Sentinel belongs to a select group of less than half a dozen Washington newspapers that have been published continually for 60 years or longer.
