Service for Tom coming up

February 5, 2020

Please mark your calendars for this very important date. A memorial service for Tom Eldred will be held at the Glenwood School on March 14, beginning at noon. A dinner catered by Lenny’s Smokehouse Catering will be provided after the service, so there will be no need to bring a potluck dish. Tom was a legendary coach, teacher, and friend to several generations of Glenwood residents and is greatly missed here in our community.

The Glenwood chapter of Public School Employees of Washington would like to thank all who came out to support the high school basketball teams and enjoy hamburgers cooked and served by the PSE members. The funds raised will provide a graduating senior of Glenwood Schools with a scholarship for college or an approved technical school. A lot of burgers were sold, and I can attest they were delicious. The Glenwood PSE appreciates all your support.

The next Kids Jam at the church for kindergarten through fifth grade kids is Friday, Feb. 7, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The evening will start with dinner then the kids can have a fun time learning about God, singing songs, playing games, and making crafts. Call the church at (509) 364-3471 if you have any questions.

The Glenwood Rodeo Association will hold its first meeting of the year on Feb. 9 at the Glenwood Grange hall. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and will include a silent auction by Queen Brandi Vance as part of her fund-raising for queen travel expenses for the coming year as she represents our Glenwood Ketchum Kalf Rodeo at various other rodeos and community events around the northwest. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Rodeo Association is invited to attend. Dues are $5 per year for individual or family. The Association is an all-volunteer group and work begins in the spring as soon as weather permits, preparing the grounds and equipment for the upcoming rodeo on Fathers’ Day weekend.

Glenwood school kids have been practicing for the annual spelling bee coming up on Wednesday, Feb. 12. School staff will be serving a soup and dessert dinner prior to the spelling bee, so this is your chance to come out and support the Glenwood students and not have to cook dinner that night. These kids appreciate all who come out, not just their parents and grandparents, but community members who care about our students. Please come show your support for our awesome kids.

The Glenwood Women’s Club has begun its 2020 fundraising effort for the Comfort Cases project to help foster and homeless children of Klickitat County. Collection jars placed in various local businesses around the county for donations to the project. Each year the Club puts together 30 cases, divided into three age groups, infants and toddlers, agers three to nine, and children 10 and older. The Club would like to give children something that is their very own to ease the trauma they are going through.

The cases, backpacks for the older children and diaper or tote bags for the infants and toddlers, would be filled with much-needed age-appropriate items such as blankets, books, pajamas, toiletries and hygiene items, school supplies, books, stuffed animals, coloring books, and crayons for the smaller children, journals for the older ones, plus diapers for infants. This is a chance for all of us to put smiles on the faces of children who are feeling the trauma of being removed from their homes suddenly, often with nothing but the clothes they’re wearing. The donation jars will be in the local businesses until the end of March and any help you can give to this very important project would be greatly appreciated.

If you have not yet mailed in your ballot for the school levy vote, there is still time. The levy voting deadline is Feb. 11. You can mail your ballot in postage-free or drop it in the collection box across the street from the General Store.
