February 12, 2020

The Goldendale Police Department (GPD) plans to add muffler noise to its priorities, beginning with helping educate the public on state law as it pertains to mufflers and the noise from mufflers.

Washington RCW 46.37.390 states the following: “Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, bypass, or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway.”

For the next two weeks, GPD will be out educating the public by making traffic stops and advising them to get their mufflers repaired when applicable. After two weeks, the police will start writing civil infractions for these offenses. The cost of the infraction will be $149 for the first offense.

GPD Chief Reggie Bartkowski stated the police department will be conducting an emphasis to address the muffler noise issue. Bartkowski has asked for aid from Washington State Patrol to assist in patrols through Goldendale to help with the exhaust offenders.

“Cutting down on the exhaust noise will be beneficial to our whole community,”

Bartkowski said.
