Sex ed bill passes Legislature

A bill requiring sex education in Washington public schools and that sparked fiery controversy is about to become law.

Senate Bill 5395 requires all public schools in Washington state to give public school children in kindergarten through 12th grade a comprehensive sexual education. It passed a final Senate vote and is now headed to Gov. Jay Inslee’s desk to be signed.

Under the amended version of the bill, students do not need to have access to sexual health education every school year. Instead, the bill requires that students have access to sexual health education once between kindergarten through third grade, once in fourth and fifth grade, twice in sixth through eighth grade, and tw...
