Companion Animal: Update on human-animal COVID-19 cases


The Bronx Zoo

SICK TIGER: Nadia, a Malayan tiger at the Bronx Zoo, has tested positive for COVID-19.

Nadia, a four-year-old female Mayalan tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York, has tested positive for COVID-19, the human form of the coronavirus. Along with Nadia, three other tigers and three African lions have developed dry coughs and reduced appetites and are suspected to have the virus as well. Because the animals have to be put under general anesthesia to be tested, it has been decided not to test the other animals at this time.

Nadia contracted the disease from an infected but asymptomatic caretaker at the zoo. The human-to-animal transmission was confirmed by the USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratory. Nadia was tested after she began to show symptoms on March 27. The zoo is...
