Dogs are the most diverse species on the planet. Due to human intervention over what scientist now estimate could be as long as 30,000 years, dogs came to be in more sizes and shapes than any other single species. Most important—to humans—they have been shaped all that time to have specific temperament characteristics to suit specific uses.
Consider the following scenario: it is pitch dark on a cold December night, and a pickup truck drives slowly along a deserted gravel back road far from town. It pulls over to the side, and a man gets out of the heated cab. He pulls down the tailgate, opens a wooden box, and lets the dog which emerges from the box jump to the ground. The dog moves...
