Unemployment scams targeting Washington State


Since the beginning of May, the Washington State Employment Security Department (ESD) has been experiencing a dramatic rise in incidents of “imposter fraud,” where an individual using stolen personal information fraudulently applies for unemployment benefits. The Seattle Times and other news sources report the fraud is being orchestrated in a highly organized process by a network based in Nigeria that is targeting Washington State in particular.

ESD Commissioner, Suzi LeVine, released this statement on Monday as an update to information she shared last week:
