June 29, 1897 - 123 Years Ago

W. J. White and crew successfully strung a telephone wire across the Columbia River, thus connecting Goldendale again with the outside world. A line to The Dalles will be in operation in about a month.

June 26, 1930 – 90 years Ago

“Deportation is a proper and effective weapon against aliens who violate our laws and relieves the United States from the cost of maintaining them in already crowded jails.” Thus stated Representative Albert Johnson, chairman of the House Committee on Immigration and Naturalization, in urging the passage of a bill providing for the deportation of an alien convicted

of the Harrison Narcotic Law as amended. He said further,...
