Even dictionaries change

On June 18, the callers to “Hotline” on KLCK Radio discussed the meaning of the word “fascism.” After the program ended, I looked up the word in an old 1973 dictionary and also in a newer 2008 dictionary.

The meaning in the old one is: 1. A Political philosophy, movement, or regime… that exalts nation and race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition. 2. A tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control.
