Dogs of the Gorge tries new ways to raise funds

GOING TO THE DOGS: Lisa Mabrey sits at her yard sale table Tuesday, raising funds for the organization Dogs of the Gorge.

Lisa Mabrey has a passion for the care of homeless and abused animals. After working for Home At Last Humane Society in The Dalles, Oregon for several years, Mabrey moved to Wishram in 2006 and started her own 501(c)3 organization called Dogs of the Gorge. She met with Goldendale city officials, including Tom Fitzgibbons who manned the local animal shelter at the time, and offered her volunteer services to the city. Eventually Mabrey was able to make the shelter on Wing Road the permanent home of Dogs of the Gorge.

The shelter has 10 kennels, and, due to the generosity of a neighbor after Dogs of the Gorge took over, they also now have outdoor pens for fresh air and exercise. This same ne...
