Here’s a brief history of the two rodeos that went conspicuously absent in June:

Alder Creek Pioneer Picnic and Rodeo

The Alder Creek Pioneer Association was formed May 27, 1911, and held its first Pioneer Picnic on June 14 of the same year in Cleveland, Washington. The picnic used to be held on Flag Day, June 14, no matter the day of the week, but is now held on the second weekend in June.

Entertainment in those days, along with pit-barbequed meat and other bountiful picnic fare, included foot races, sack races, ball games, local saddle horse races, and if some farmer had a horse he though could buck, he might talk some young daredevil into trying his luck.
