Arnold does well in Nevada

We hope everyone had a safe and fun Fourth of July weekend. The weather cooperated nicely for picnics and other outdoor recreation. Joslyn Arnold had an unforgettable Fourth of July week in Winnemucca, Nevada, at the Silver State International Rodeo. Representing Washington State in Junior High Rodeo Association competition, Joslyn made it to the short round in both goat tying and breakaway roping on Sunday. She placed third in the final round and second overall in breakaway, adding another beautiful buckle to her collection. Wow, Joslyn, way to represent your community and your state. We are all so proud of you and glad you were able to have this wonderful experience. Hopefully we’ll get to see you competing in Washington State High School Rodeo next year.

Another Glenwood athlete is having a great summer competing in his favorite sport. Liam McLaughlin, son of Jay and Bridget, has been playing baseball on the Hood River Whitecaps team. Their team has been playing in an 18 and under league that, besides the Whitecaps, includes teams from The Dalles, Pendleton, Hermiston, LaGrande, and Baker City. Their season will continue into early August, and we wish Liam and his team the best of luck this season. Hopefully, things will be back to normal by next spring, and Liam will be able to compete on the Columbia High School baseball team.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Virginia Effinger upon her passing on July 4. Virginia was a long-time resident of Glenwood who was preceded in death by her husband, Vance. If we receive news of a planned memorial service, we will include it in a future column.

I know this is repetitive, but we can’t thank enough Taunie Wilson, Diane Burgin, and other helpers who continue to pick up produce in Goldendale and distribute it to Glenwood community members on Thursdays or Fridays each week. Their dedication is providing a great service to our community. Check the Glenwood Facebook page for day and time each week. This food is donated and made available to all who can use it, thanks to the generosity of food producers in the state.
