Heads Up for Rabbit Owners

Washington state rabbit owners need to be aware of yet another highly contagious virus in the news these days; not COVID-19 but the virus (RHDV2) which affects rabbits. RHDV2 does not affect humans and is not transmittable to non-rabbit species however its impact on both domestic and wild rabbit and hare populations could become devastating – as it is already in Europe – if steps are not taken to contain and mitigate the virus immediately. In some countries it is already nicknamed “Bunny Ebola” and ultimately much more is at stake as wild rabbits are a staple for many of Washington state’s predators such as coyote, bobcat, eagles, badgers, and wolves.
