A different kind of virus

How a Facebook string of false accusations ran amuck

VILIFIED WITHOUT CAUSE: Kelly Schroder, right, was repeatedly accused on Facebook of having COVID and callously visiting public places in Goldendale. On March 31, Schroder tested negative for the virus.

Back in March, a day after Gov. Jay Inslee shut down restaurants and bars on the 16th, a disturbing call came into The Sentinel. The caller stated that a nurse at Klickitat Valley Hospital (KVH) who had been diagnosed with COVID 19 had been drinking at the Simcoe Café the previous night. The caller insisted the unnamed nurse was not practicing social distancing, was flippant about her diagnosis, and stayed until the bar closed, taking no precautions to avoid spreading the virus.

The Sentinel contacted KVH. A spokesperson responded, saying the hospital was aware of the allegations, had investigated, and found that the story was totally untrue. Because of HIPAA laws that protect patient's...
