Klickitat PUD commissioners say no rate increase

November 20, 2019

Budget hearing set for Tuesday, December 10

Klickitat PUD has announced that following review of the first two drafts of the 2020 operating budget, KPUD commissioners have decided that there will be no retail electric rate increase in 2020. This decision follows no retail electric rate increases in 2017 or 2018 and a 1.5 percent rate increase in 2019.

According to a KPUD press release, “Affirmation that Klickitat PUD is on a solid path recently came from bond ratings agencies Moody’s and Fitch Ratings. The two entities recently affirmed KPUD’s A3 and A- ratings, respectively. Klickitat PUD commissioners are pleased with the overall PUD operating results in 2019 and, in spite of a slower start up at the RNG facility than was planned, they believe that the plant will perform and concluded that net revenues from the facility could be used to offset the need for a rate increase in 2020.”

“The output from RNG is showing a steadily improving trend, and I believe this is the right decision for 2020,” said Commissioner President Dan Gunkel. “We have a long-term goal of lowering our electric rates relative to other utilities in similar service territories. That is why we embarked on this project and this is the first step in that direction. Our staff continues to meet or exceed our budgeted performance in serving our customers and we thank them for that consistent effort.”

A public hearing to consider the 2020 operating budget has been set for Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. at Klickitat PUD’s office in Goldendale.
